New roof on a 1930s farmhouse in Pittem

186 m² of old concrete tiles off, new insulation and battens on, red clay tiles to match the barn. Four weeks, one week of rain.

New roof on a 1930s farmhouse in Pittem

The owners had buckets in the attic and a heating bill they could no longer explain. The tiles were tired, there was no insulation at all and two rafters over the kitchen had gone soft.

What we did

  • Stripped 186 m² of concrete tiles and the old laths, and took them to the container park.
  • Replaced the two rafters and straightened the ridge line.
  • Laid a breathable underlay and 22 cm of wood-fibre insulation.
  • Finished in red clay pantiles to match the barn, with new zinc valleys and gutters.
Warmer the first week. We have stopped going up there with buckets.

What we ran into

A week of rain in the middle, which is what the tarps are for. The rotten rafters were priced separately and approved on site before we touched them. The job finished two days after the date on the quote.
